AFROZ SHAH

Afroz Shah, a young Indian lawyer from Mumbai and his 84-year-old neighbor Harbansh Mathur, started cleaning up Versova Beach themselves, one piece of rubbish at a time (October 2015).

Every weekend since, Shah has inspired volunteers to join in (slum-dwellers, Bollywood stars, schoolchildren and politicians).

So far, the volunteers have collected over 4,000 tons from the 2.5 kilometre beach.

He vows to continue his beach clean-up crusade until people and their governments around the world change their approach to producing, using and discarding plastic and other products that wash up onto beaches all over the world.

Anne Bonny dressed and acted as a man while on Captain Calico Jack's ship. She and Mary Read are often identified as being unique.
