HALLOWEEN! HALLOWEEN! HALLOWEEN! HALLOWEEN!

HALLOWEEN! HALLOWEEN!

HALLOWEEN IS COMING...

Between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death. Halloween is time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as time to honor all saints and martyrs. The evening before was known as all HALLOWS' Eve and Later Halloween. Over time,   Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating.

In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats.

SUGASTIETA - LA ARBOLEDA

La Arboleda, La Reineta and Trapagaran are three small villages at the foot on the hills of the Triano mountains which are barely 800 high.
It all started as early as the 11th century. A few spots have been the subject to archaeological  investigation, dating the activity of these mining installations between the 11th and 13th centuries. But the real-rush came in the 18th century. The village of La Arboleda was established in 1877 for the purpose of housing miners who arrived from all over the peninsula of Iberia. This village also features an old mining hospital dating from the last decade of the 19th century.

Iron and iron processing is so tightly weaved into the history of the Basque Country and especially Bilbao. Iron was the lifeblood of the whole region for more than a century.

Trapagaran, which is located on the foot of the hills, is connected with la Reineta, on the top, through a historic cable car. This cable car still runs today. From La Reineta to La Arboleda it is only a short distance. Usually horses and cows roam around freely and old mining holes have filled up with  water, forming pleasant lakes for swimming today.

THE BOMBING OF GUERNICA (April 26, 1937)

The bombing of Guernica was an aerial attack on the Basque town of Guernica, causing widespread destruction and civilian deaths, during the Spanish Civil War.The Basque government reported 1,654 people were killed.

The bombing has often been considered one of the first raids in the history of modern military aviation on a defendless civilian population and denounced as a terrist act.

The bombing was the subject of a famous anti-war painting by Pablo Picasso.

The raid took place on a Monday, ordinarily, a market day in Guernica.

Steer's reports on the horror of Guernica were greatly appreciated by the Basque people. Steer had made their plight known. The Basque authorities later honored his memory by naming a street in Guernica kale George street, and commissioning a bronze bust with the dedication:

"George Steer, journalist, who told the world the story about Guernica"

EASTER EGGS / EASTER BUNNY OR RABBIT

Easter eggs are special eggs that are often given to celebrate Easter or springtime.

The oldest tradition is to use dyed or painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as jelly beans. These eggs can be hidden for children to find in Easter morning, who may be told they were left by the Easter Bunny. They also may be put in a basket filled with real or artificial straw to resemble a bird's nest.

The Easter Bunny or Easter Rabbit is character depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs, who sometimes is depicted with clothes. In legend, the creature brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and sometimes also toys to the homes of children.

Eggs, like rabbits and hares, are fertility symbols of antiquity. Since birds lay eggs and rabbits and hares give birth to large litters in the early spring, these became symbols of the rising fertility of the earth at the Vernal Equinox.
